January is Poverty Awarness Month

Today, 37.3 million Americans—and 1 in 6 children (that’s 18 percent of all American children)-are living below the poverty line. They live in families who are of necessity making hard choices between food, health care, heat and rent. To bring attention to this national crisis, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has designated January as “Poverty in America Awareness Month.”
During this special month of observance, Catholic Charities of Central Texas devotes its efforts to heightening the Central Texas communities’ understanding of the breadth and depth of the problems of poverty.
Did You Know? In Texas….
- The percentage of children who live in low-income working families is 43%, ranking the state 47th in the nation;
- 46% of low-income working families have at least one parent without a high school degree and 64 percent have at least one parent without any post-secondary education;
- 50% of minority working families are low-income; and
- 56% of families have housing costs greater than one-third of income.
