Becoming an organ donor

Catholic Charities of Central Texas is working with Donate Life Texas to promote and bring awareness of registering Hispanics and others to become an organ, tissue, and eye donor. Read more on how you can participate.

More than 10,000 Texans are currently waiting for an organ transplant. Approximately half are Hispanic. By registering to become an organ, eye or tissue donor, you can give the gift of life to others in need. Plus, because transplants are more successful if the donor and recipient share the same ethnicity, you’ll be able to give the gift of life to others in our own community.

The Texas Methodist Foundation has donated a $1,000 scholarship award as an incentive for a friendly competition among service organizations like ours. The scholarship will be awarded to the organization that signs up the most new registrants between now and August 17, 2009. The scholarship is destined for a student of the organization’s choosing to a two- or four-year college or university in Texas.

Registration is simple. Complete the attached form and return it to the address listed. Using this version of the registration form ensures Catholic Charities will be credited for the registration. The forms may be forwarded via e-mail or printed and distributed. NOTE: Even if you have previously signed up to become an organ donor, you must re-register under the new system to be included in the current database.

The National Minority Organ Donor Awareness Day was on August 1st. Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope John Paul II have strongly supported organ donation. Pope John Paul II called organ donation “a sincere gift that expresses our call to love and communion.” Sign up and give the give of life.

Find answers. Organ donation can raise questions for many people. Donate Life Texas has information on the concerns that are particularly important to our community at Web sites designed especially for us www.hispanicsdonatelifetx.org and www.hispanosdonanvidatx.org.
